The Indianapolis Colts will be without one of their key wide receivers for several weeks after Alec Pierce suffered an injury to his left heel.
Pierce aggravated the injury during Indianapolis' 33-30 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He left the game in the first quarter and subsequent evaluations determined that he would need time to recover.
Alec Pierce expected to miss several weeks
The injury involves the same heel Pierce had surgery on during the offseason. Initial X-rays did not show a fracture, and the receiver will not require another surgery.
The Colts are hoping Pierce can return around the middle of the season, although no definitive return date has been established.
Indianapolis signs Darius Slayton
With Pierce sidelined, Indianapolis moved quickly to add veteran Darius Slayton.
Slayton spent the first seven seasons of his career with the New York Giants and joins Indianapolis with 296 receptions, 4,435 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns in 106 regular-season games.
The veteran receiver also has extensive familiarity with quarterback Daniel Jones. The two spent six seasons together with the Giants and appeared in 64 games together.
Slayton could have an immediate role
The new addition joins a receiving group that also includes Josh Downs, Keenan Allen, Ashton Dulin, Deion Burks and Laquon Treadwell.
The Colts will face the Houston Texans on Sunday, September 27, in an AFC South matchup, giving Slayton limited time to get comfortable with his new team.
