George Kittle da gran paso para volver con los 49ers

George Kittle takes major step toward 49ers return

George Kittle received one of the biggest positive developments of the San Francisco 49ers' preseason when the team activated him from the physically unable to perform list, allowing him to begin practicing as he continues his recovery.

The move represents an important step for the tight end, who suffered a torn Achilles during last season's playoff game. Kittle has repeatedly said his goal is to return for the 2026 season opener against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.

George Kittle can now return to practice

The 49ers activated Kittle from the PUP list on Sunday. He can now begin practicing and move toward a level of preparation closer to the demands of an actual NFL game.

The activation does not automatically mean Kittle will be available in Week 1. However, it does show that San Francisco believes his recovery has progressed enough to begin the next phase.

If Kittle had remained on the PUP list through the final roster cutdown, he would not have been eligible to play until Week 5. That makes the move particularly important for the 49ers' offensive plans.

Kittle suffered the injury in the playoffs

Kittle tore his Achilles during San Francisco's playoff game from the previous season. Since then, the tight end has worked through rehabilitation with the goal of returning as soon as possible.

The player has remained optimistic throughout the process and repeatedly expressed hope that he could still face the Rams in the season opener.

He will now have the opportunity to test himself again in practice, although the 49ers will have to carefully manage his workload.

San Francisco will not rush his return

Kittle's activation should be viewed as an encouraging sign, but not as confirmation that he will play on Sept. 10.

After such a serious injury, the team will need to evaluate how his body responds to the demands of practice, including changes of direction, contact and explosive movements required at his position.

The 49ers still have time before the regular season begins. The team plans to travel to Australia on Sept. 2 to begin adjusting to the time difference before facing the Rams.

Kittle could return to a revamped offense

When George Kittle returns to the field, he will find a receiving group featuring several new and familiar faces.

San Francisco signed wide receiver Mike Evans during free agency and later selected De'Zhaun Stribling with the No. 33 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The team also reunited with Deebo Samuel after a one-year absence.

The combination of Kittle, Evans, Samuel and the rest of the receiving corps could give Brock Purdy several options in the passing game if everyone remains healthy.

Week 1 will be the major test

The 49ers open the season against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 10 in Melbourne. Kittle will have several weeks to demonstrate that he can regain his physical form before San Francisco decides whether he is ready to travel.

The team is expected to make a decision about his status before the trip to Australia. That would allow Kittle to avoid international travel if doctors and coaches determine he still needs additional recovery time.

After the Rams game, San Francisco will face the Miami Dolphins, Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos during the next three weeks. That schedule could give the team flexibility if Kittle needs additional time.

For now, coming off the PUP list is clearly positive news. George Kittle is not guaranteed to play in Week 1, but he has cleared an important hurdle and is now much closer to returning to a 49ers offense that hopes to compete near the top of the NFC again.
