The NFL is entering one of its most tense weeks of the year: the roster reduction process. All teams must trim their rosters from 90 players to 53 by Tuesday, August 26 at 4:00 p.m. ET, a deadline that will determine the immediate future of hundreds of athletes.
This move is part of the protocol leading up to the start of the regular season, which begins on September 4. During this period, coaches and managers face difficult decisions, as they will have to release players who have worked throughout the preseason, many of them rookies or depth players looking for an opportunity to establish themselves in the league.
For teams, it's not just about keeping the most talented names, but also about assembling balanced rosters that fit their tactical needs, key positions, and depth in case of injuries. Therefore, evaluation in preseason practices and games is crucial.
Here are some of the moves:
Philadelphia Eagles: They released cornerback Mike Hilton, according to his agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey. Additionally, the Eagles made their third trade of the day, sending offensive tackle Darian Kennard to the Green Bay Packers for a 2027 sixth-round pick.
Cleveland Browns: They released quarterback Tyler Huntley, along with 17 other players, despite Huntley playing in the final minutes of their preseason win against the Rams on Saturday. The Browns plan to keep four quarterbacks on their roster: Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: They waived rookie safety Shilo Sanders, son of Deion Sanders, one day after he was ejected for throwing a punch in the preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills. Although coach Todd Bowles criticized the move, he left open the possibility of Sanders returning to the practice squad.
Dallas Cowboys: Released offensive tackle La'el Collins, a former key offensive lineman, according to multiple reports.
New York Jets: Released linebacker Jamin Davis, a first-round pick in the 2021 draft by the Washington Commanders, along with six other players.
Los Angeles Rams: Announced the release of linebacker Tony Fields II and 10 other players.
Atlanta Falcons: Released defensive lineman Morgan Fox, despite the $3 million guaranteed on his two-year contract signed this offseason.
