The Denver Broncos ended Week 4 with a major concern in their secondary after Patrick Surtain II left Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers with a right ankle injury.
Surtain suffered the non-contact injury shortly before halftime and did not return for the second half. Trainers helped him leave the field.
Denver loses both starting cornerbacks
The Broncos' situation became even more difficult when Riley Moss, their other starting cornerback, also left the game with a rib injury.
Surtain entered the matchup with 21 tackles through the first four weeks and remains one of Denver's most important defensive players.
Broncos await further evaluation
Head coach Sean Payton did not provide a definitive diagnosis immediately after the game. Denver will now await additional medical evaluations to determine the recovery timeline for Surtain and Moss.
The loss of both starting cornerbacks creates a major challenge for a defense that allowed 24 points in the loss to San Francisco and must now find solutions in the secondary ahead of Week 5.
