The NFL is entering one of the toughest weeks of the calendar before the start of the regular season. With the deadline to define 53-man rosters per team approaching, a total of 1,184 players will be released in the coming days, representing one of the most significant cuts in professional football.
Currently, each franchise has a maximum of 90 players on their preseason rosters. However, the league requires that all teams reduce their rosters before the deadline, leaving only the players who will be active in the 2025 season.
This process not only impacts the athletes who lose their spots, but also the free agent market, as many of them will seek to be claimed by other organizations or find space on practice squads. For coaches and general managers, the decision involves carefully analyzing performance in preseason camps and games, in order to balance youth, experience, and tactical needs.
The massive cuts make it clear that competition in the NFL is fierce: Of the more than 2,800 players who participate in training camps, fewer than half make the final roster.
