The Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons meet Sunday, September 20, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Week 2 of the 2026 NFL season. Both teams enter at 0-1 after losing their respective openers, but the two teams arrived at that record in very different ways.
Carolina lost 59-37 to the Chicago Bears in the highest-scoring Week 1 game in NFL history. Bryce Young threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns, but the Panthers defense allowed 552 yards and eight touchdowns. Atlanta, meanwhile, lost 20-13 to the Pittsburgh Steelers after struggling to generate passing production and committing three turnovers, including two Cooper Rush interceptions.
The matchup also opens NFC South play for both teams. Carolina will play its first road game of the season, while Atlanta will make its 2026 debut at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Game context
The Panthers enter after an offensively productive game despite allowing a high number of points. Carolina tied Chicago at 31-31 during the third quarter before the Bears responded with three consecutive touchdowns to pull away.
Atlanta had a different experience. The Falcons kept the game close against Pittsburgh but finished with only 263 total yards. Bijan Robinson produced 173 yards from scrimmage, while Atlanta struggled to generate additional production from its receivers.
Quarterback will also be a central storyline. Cooper Rush has been confirmed as Atlanta's starter for the second consecutive week. Michael Penix Jr. remains out while recovering from a knee injury, while Tua Tagovailoa is doubtful because of an oblique injury.
Carolina Panthers situation
Bryce Young produced strong numbers in Carolina's opener. He completed 23 of 37 passes for 361 yards, three touchdowns and one interception while keeping the Panthers within reach for much of the second half.
Jalen Coker was his primary target against Chicago. The receiver recorded eight catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns, while Chuba Hubbard contributed one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown.
Hubbard finished with 49 rushing yards and 38 receiving yards. The ground game will be particularly important against Atlanta because the Falcons feature Bijan Robinson, one of the league's most productive all-purpose backs.
Carolina's defense needs to improve after allowing 59 points. The Panthers will have to find ways to contain Robinson while also putting pressure on Cooper Rush, who struggled to consistently generate passing production against Pittsburgh.
Atlanta Falcons situation
Atlanta lost 20-13 to Pittsburgh in Week 1. Cooper Rush completed 12 of 22 passes for 143 yards and one touchdown but threw two interceptions. One was returned 35 yards for a touchdown by T.J. Watt.
Bijan Robinson was clearly Atlanta's primary offensive weapon. He rushed for 83 yards on 21 carries and added 90 receiving yards on eight catches, including a receiving touchdown. He finished with 173 yards from scrimmage.
Drake London and Kyle Pitts had limited involvement in the opener. London had two receptions for 29 yards and one six-yard rush, while Pitts received only one target and did not record a catch.
Atlanta's defense held Pittsburgh to 238 total yards and limited the Steelers to 2-for-12 on third down. The unit will now face Bryce Young after the Carolina quarterback threw for 361 yards in Week 1.
Players and factors to watch
Bryce Young will be one of the central players in the matchup. He enters after throwing for 361 yards and three touchdowns, and he has also produced strong numbers against Atlanta. In his first four starts against the Falcons, Young completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 1,133 yards and seven touchdowns.
Bijan Robinson will also have a major role. Carolina allowed significant rushing production against Chicago and now faces a back who can also be heavily involved as a receiver. Robinson caught eight passes against Pittsburgh and accounted for 173 of Atlanta's 263 yards from scrimmage.
The connection between Cooper Rush and Atlanta's receivers will be another important factor. Drake London and Kyle Pitts had limited involvement in Week 1, so Carolina will have to account for the possibility of increased opportunities for both players.
Jalen Coker is another player to watch after producing 138 receiving yards and two touchdowns against Chicago. His role could be important as Carolina looks to complement Young's passing attack.
Injuries to know
Atlanta has two confirmed absences. Michael Penix Jr. is out with a knee injury, while cornerback Billy Bowman Jr. is out with an Achilles injury.
Tua Tagovailoa is listed as doubtful with an oblique injury and did not practice during the week. Cooper Rush will start. Guard Chris Lindstrom is questionable with a concussion, while cornerback A.J. Terrell is questionable with a shoulder injury.
Carolina will be without defensive tackle Bobby Brown III, who was ruled out with a back injury after missing practice throughout the week.
Outside linebacker Patrick Jones II is questionable with a back injury after participating on a limited basis during all three practice days. Jalen Coker has no official game-status designation after fully participating Friday.
Head-to-head history
The Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons have met 57 times in the regular season. Atlanta holds a 37-20 advantage in the series.
The rivalry has been a regular part of NFC South play since Carolina entered the NFL in 1995, giving the two franchises a long history of divisional meetings.
Bryce Young has also had notable results against Atlanta since entering the NFL. Before Sunday's game, he was 4-1 as a starter against the Falcons.
This game will be the first of two regular-season meetings between the franchises in 2026 and marks the beginning of their divisional schedules.
Final preview
The Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons enter Week 2 at 0-1 with different areas to address. Carolina scored 37 points and produced 469 yards against Chicago but allowed 59 points. Atlanta's defense performed better against Pittsburgh, but the Falcons generated only 263 total yards.
Bijan Robinson's production will be central for Atlanta, particularly while Cooper Rush remains the starting quarterback. Carolina will look to build around Bryce Young and Jalen Coker after both produced significant numbers in the opener.
The injury situations will also affect the matchup. Atlanta remains without Michael Penix Jr. and could be without Tua Tagovailoa, while Carolina will be missing Bobby Brown III.
With both teams starting the season with losses, Sunday's matchup also represents their first divisional game of 2026 and an opportunity to begin shaping their NFC South campaigns.
