It was designed in 1966 by Oscar Riedner, vice president of Tiffany & Co., who created a prototype inspired by a ball purchased at a toy store and presented to the then commissioner of the NFL, Pete Rozelle.

The trophy debuted in Super Bowl I, won by Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers, whose name was adopted for the trophy after his death in 1970. Since then, it has become a sporting icon and a symbol of excellence in American football.
