Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell was unable to contain his emotion and was on the verge of tears during the press conference following his team's upset loss to the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs.
Despite a historic regular season in which the Lions claimed first place in the NFC with an impressive 15-2 record, the Detroit team was unable to capitalize on their status as favorites and fell by a resounding 45-31 at Ford Field. This setback extends the championship drought for the Lions, who have yet to make it to a Super Bowl since the creation of this stage in the NFL.
An unexpected end to a historic season
The loss was a devastating blow for Detroit fans, who had placed high hopes on their team after a campaign full of success. However, the Lions were unable to overcome crucial mistakes, turning the ball over on five occasions during the game, something that Washington took advantage of to prevail and advance to the Conference Final.
Campbell takes responsibility
In his address to the media, Campbell did not hide his disappointment, revealing the deep pain he felt at the elimination.
“It just hurts to lose, man,” he said, his voice breaking. “I don’t care if you’re seeded seven, six, five or first… because I’ve lost them all, almost.”
Visibly emotional, the coach took responsibility for the defeat:
“It’s my fault,” he declared, while trying to maintain his composure in front of the journalists.
