In a disappointing start to the 2025 NFL season, the Miami Dolphins fell resoundingly 8-33 to the Indianapolis Colts on September 7 at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The Week 1 game marked the end of Miami's four-game winning streak in season openers, while the Colts broke an 11-year drought without a win on opening day. Daniel Jones excelled in his debut as Indianapolis' starting quarterback, throwing for 272 yards and a touchdown, in addition to adding two rushing scores. Spencer Shrader contributed four key field goals, while the Colts defense, led by Laiatu Latu with an interception and Nick Cross with a sack, dominated Tua Tagovailoa, who finished with 114 yards, two interceptions, and a lost fumble. Miami's offense managed just 211 yards, with De'Von Achane scoring the only touchdown on an 11-yard pass in the fourth quarter. Injuries plagued the Dolphins, with James Daniels and Storm Duck leaving the game, while Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle combined for just 70 yards. The Colts, motivated by the tribute to their late owner Jim Irsay, demonstrated superiority in every aspect, leaving Miami with much room to improve in this new season.
Anthony Richardson, Man of the Game
Quarterback Anthony Richardson shone with a spectacular performance, throwing for over 250 yards and three touchdowns, showing maturity and precision in his second year as a starter. His connection with Michael Pittman Jr. and rookie receiver Adonai Mitchell was key in opening up Miami's defense.
On the ground, Jonathan Taylor also provided solidity with over 90 yards and a touchdown, keeping Indianapolis' offense balanced.
Dolphins Without Answers
The Dolphins, meanwhile, endured an offensive nightmare. Tua Tagovailoa was constantly pressured and could only complete a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Miami's offensive line proved vulnerable to the intensity of the Colts' defense, led by DeForest Buckner, who recorded two sacks.
Miami's ground game was virtually nonexistent, and the offense piled up errors that facilitated Indianapolis' dominance.
A Sweeping Start
The 33-8 score reflects the Colts' dominance, who not only demonstrated their offensive prowess but also the strength of their defense, limiting Miami's speedy receivers to modest performances.
